Before you hire anyone

California’s Contractors State License Board gives homeowners a short list. It applies to every contractor, us included:

  • Check the license number on the CSLB website. Seeing a number on a card does not mean the license is valid.
  • Get at least three written bids on the same scope of work, and be wary of one far below the rest.
  • By law, a home improvement down payment cannot be more than 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less, with one narrow bond exception.
  • Every active C-8 concrete contractor must carry workers’ compensation insurance, employees or not. If an uninsured worker is hurt on your property, you could be liable.
